Israel L. Butt (Israel La Fayette), b. 1848
History of African Methodism in Virginia, or Four Decades in the Old Dominion
Hampton, Va.: Hampton Institute Press, 1908.
Reverend Israel Butt's History of African Methodism in Virginia, published in 1908, offers a brief history of the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church in Virginia. Butt, the General Secretary of the Virginia Annual Conference, offers details of the Conference's sessions from 1867-1906, as well as numerous comprehensive sketches of leading Virginia ministers. The History of African Methodism lists statistics, sermons, and other Conference records. Butt's History is a useful addition to histories of the A.M.E. Church and Virginia.
