C. H. Phillips (Charles Henry), 1858-1951

Charles Henry Phillips (1858-1951) was a highly influential bishop of the Christian (previously called "Colored") Methodist Episcopal (C.M.E.) Church. He strove to make the C.M.E. Church a national denomination, extending its reach beyond the South. He is well known for his efforts to help the C.M.E. Church attain equal status with the other Methodist denominations of black membership. He fought to erase the stigma associated with the Church's origins in the institution of slavery.
