Benjamin Tucker Tanner, 1835-1923

Benjamin Tucker Tanner (1835-1923) had a long and influential career in the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church. He served as an A.M.E. minister in Washington, DC, and Baltimore, Md., as principal of an A.M.E. school in Frederick, Md., and later as an A.M.E. bishop. He was editor of The Christian Recorder (1868-84) and the AME Church Review (1884-88) and recording secretary for the A.M.E. General Conference. Tanner's An Apology for African Methodism was well respected for its scholarship and literary quality.
