A. W. Wayman (Alexander Walker), 1821-1895
Alexander Walker Wayman, (1821-1895), was born a free man in Caroline County, MD. As a young man he was converted and joined the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church, first as a licensed exhorter, then as a deacon. Wayman quickly established himself as one of that Church's leading figures. He was named bishop in 1864, and worked for the advancement of the A.M.E. Church until his death.
