John Wesley, 1703-1791

John Wesley, Methodist leader and evangelist, was born in 1703 and received his education at Oxford. He spent two years in Savannah, Georgia as a missionary and published his first hymn book at Charleston in 1737. On his return to England, he became increasingly prominent as a preacher and laid the foundations for his own Christian movement. He continued to preach and publish through 1787, after which his publishing tapered off, but not his travelling or preaching. He passed away in 1791, mourned by vast numbers.
