These resources build upon the learning goals in the elementary lessons, but encourage students to think of history as more than a list of facts. As teachers, we know that our understanding of history changes and evolves as our conceptions of ourselves and our world change. However, it is increasingly difficult to introduce students to this complex idea when we have the responsibility to address the growing state and new Common Core standards. With the resources provided here, teachers can explore and deepen seemingly linear understandings of history. These resources enable teachers to model the study of simple primary resources to confirm or revise student hypotheses about the commemorative sites.

Like all LEARN NC lessons, these resources provide a starting point for teachers. Teachers are encouraged to adapt the resources as necessary to meet the needs of their individual students and incorporate their own expertise and interests. LEARN NC encourages you to build upon their lessons and make them better. If you do, let LEARN NC know about your improvements so that they may feature your work on their site!
