  • Description

The Orange County Training, Northside Elementary, Lincoln High Memorial consists of a central black granite panel with an oval top and three gray granite panels on either side to form a shallow V shape. All panels stand on a single gray granite base. The center panel holds the inscriptions. An incised tiger face, the school mascot, is near the top. The inscriptions and the tiger face are in orange, the school color. The side panels hold the names of alumni of the schools. Of the six panels four have been filled with names, one is partially filled and one has no names. As of 2023 there were approximately 280 names.

The center panel was placed first and the flanking panels some years later. The memorial stands just beyond a low decorative block wall facing the former Lincoln High school building. The wall borders the sidewalk and a courtyard in front of the building entrance.

  • Subject Notes

The Orange County Training School for African Americans opened in 1917. In 1930 the town of Chapel Hill took control of the school and reduced funding to the minimum six months required by law. Residents of the Northside community of Chapel Hill then taxed themselves to provide a full academic year. In 1949 students at the school were successful in having the school renamed Lincoln High, eliminating the stigma of a “training” school. The former school building on Merritt Mill Road was opened in 1951 and now houses the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Administrative Office.

  • Location

The memorial wall is located at the Lincoln Center which houses the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Administrative Office. The street address is 750 S. Merritt Mill Rd., Chapel Hill, NC.

  • Landscape

The memorial stands facing the building entrance near a large tree with an expansive open lawn behind.
