Philip Van Every was the grandson of Lance Packing Company founders Philip L. Lance and Salem A. Van Every. In 1932 he joined the company, first as a salesman, then becoming president and chief executive officer in 1943 upon his father’s death. Under Philip the operation went from a small family-owned business to a nationally recognized publicly traded company. By his retirement in 1973 Lance had 4,500 employees in 34 states and $80 million in annual sales. Van Every also served two terms as Charlotte mayor in the 1950s.
The statue is located on the Trail of History near the Metropolitan development off of Charlottetown Avenue. This statue is one of 21 existing or planned statues along the trail, the first of which was The Spirit of Mecklenburg.
The Trail of History near uptown Charlotte follows the Little Sugar Creek greenway. The greenway runs four miles along the small stream lined with trees, shrubbery, flowering plants and places for seating.
