Sir:
My reason for not joining the Brigade agreeable to orders said to have been Issued last Spring for that purpose, are as follows:
At the time them orders were Issued, I was a prisoner with the Enemy, and did not get released till the last of July. After that time I was sick, till I heard you should say (after you came from
the Southward last fall) that no Officer that had not joined was Considered as belonging to the Line; which induced me to believe I was struck off the Roster, and consequently never made any application for orders. I am still in a low state of health, and don’t think myself able to go through the fatigue of a campaign, and beg Leave to resign my Commission in the Continental army.
