Head Quarters, near Chad's Ford on Brandywine Creek,
Sept. 10th, 1777.

Dr Sir:—

Our army is disposed to receive the enemy who are about three miles distance & advancing, every person is in high spirits, and expect a very important engagement. Our army is supposed superior, and the enemy is very shy. I have delayed my journey home for some time in expectation of this (now expected) event, and hope before many hours to have the satisfaction of seeing our enemies put to rout. I can write you no more at present, but that
