A. MACLAINE TO GOV. CASWELL,
[From Executive Letter Book.]

Wilmington 14th Janry 1778.

Dear Sir:

When I left New Bern I did not know who would accept the appointment of Notary, and therefore would not make any application to your Excellency for this place.

Mr. John DuBois one of the Justices of New Hanover county, has consented to act in that department, if your Excellency should think proper to appoint him; and as there is not any lawyer resident in the town, and few would take the trouble of it, I beg leave to recommend Mr. DuBois as a gentleman of diligence and application. He shall have all the instructions in my power, and he will be possessed of the Notary's Register, to which he can refer upon every occasion, that may happen.

I am with much respect Dear Sir,
Your Excellency's obedient servant,
A. MACLAINE.
