Hillsboro, Feb’y. 5th, 1782.
Dear Sir:
I am informed that Fanning is gaining strength, and that it is apprehended the Associates of the Criminals, who have been lately Executed, will fall on some Measures to commit some Acts of Violence in retaliation. I suppose your person will be an object with them, and the persons of our principal Officers.
I request you to pay diligent attention to all their movements, and keep a force in readiness to attack any Party of them which may Assemble, and also to send Parties into the disaffected Settlement to patrol and keep you and the Officers under you informed.
Give notice hereof to the Officers of Guilford who will Co-operate if you deem it necessary.
I have not time to be particular, and I know your own Judgment
will best determine upon what is to be done. Be so good as to order the State draughts of your District, who have not yet assembled, to Rendezvous at Hillsborough as early as possible.
