GOV. THOS. BURKE TO GEN. BUTLER.

Halifax, March 25th, 1782.

Dear Sir:

Yours of the 6th Instant reached me Just now. The Inclosures are indeed of little moment, and I suppose before this you have many reasons besides what can be drawn from them to Conclude that a force ought Immediately to be advanced against Fanning and his party.

I have long since made the necessary arrangements and for want of Officers or Horse equipped agreeably to the Law or fit for any purpose I have been much Embarrassed and delayed. I had at length appointed Major Hogg to Command an Expedition against the disaffected, and had ordered that part of the State Troops, which were at Franklin, to act under his Orders, and also had given him letters to you and other Officers requesting a reinforcement of Militia if necessary, but at the very Moment when they were ready to March, Major Crofton refuses to obey the Orders on pretence that he only has a right to Command. I am now about to dispatch an Officer to put him in arrest and to proceed with the Troops to Hillsborough where I shall be in a few days. You will receive some letters from me relatively to the Guards proper for the Seat where the Assembly will sit before this reaches you.

I am, Dr. Sir,
Your Obt. hum. St.,
THOS. BURKE.
Genl. Butler.
