TO GOV. BURKE FROM COL. ROBERT BURTON.
[From Executive Letter Book.]

February 14th, 1782.

Sir:

By the Bearer you will receive yours and Colonel Read’s mares. There was only one sorrel horse of yours left with me and he was sent with other horses by an Express Rider by the name of Spears to the care of General Jones.

Mr. Duke will not exchange his horse for others of inferior value nor will he take anything less than two hundred pounds in money, or twenty thousand pounds of Tobacco for him, a price I thought too high though he is a very fine horse.

With my most respectful compliments to your lady,
I am Your Excellency’s H’ble Serv’t,
RO. BURTON,
Q. M. Genl.
