COL. JAMES ARMSTRONG TO BRIG. GEN. SUMNER.

Pitt County, Jan. 9th, 1782,

Dear General:

Your orders of the 13th December came safe to hand which I shall pay the greatest attention too. Before I received your letter I had wrote to Brig. Genl. Caswell on the subject begging he would give Lieut. Fenner all the assistance in his power to expedite the business, and enable me to comply with your orders, I have informed Captn. Chapman & also Doctor McClure. They complain of indisposition, and I believe unable to take the Field at present. They informed me they wrote you on the Occasion. Capt. Coleman, I expected, was gone on to Head Quarters with about 50 or 60 men from Kingston. Almost a Month past, when I saw him last, he told me he should proceed on immediately with Troops. If he should not be gone I shall desire him to proceed. I will wait on Gen. Caswell on his return from Halifax to know his intentions about giving orders to his Colonel of the different Counties to turn out their Quota of men agreeable to Law. Should he comply, I shall take proper measures to collect, and send them to Head Quarters as fast as possible. I have not appointed any place of Rendezvous until I see the General and know his determination, after which I shall write you immediately.

I am, with every sentiment of esteem and regard,
Dear General,
Your most obedt. servt.,
JAMES ARMSTRONG.
