COL. ROB. BURTON TO BRIG. GEN. SUMNER.

March 23rd, 1782.

Dear Sir:

Some time ago I sent three waggons to Wilmington on business within my Departmt., and a Major of yours by the name of McCree took one of them out of my service and has sent her to South Carolins. As my own business ought to be done by my own waggons before any other Officer has a right to call them into service, I hope you will not allow any of your officers to act in the same manner in future without proper authority. The Continental Commissary of Military Stores has delivered 1,000 Stand of Arms and as many Cartridge Boxes to Col. Long and myself for the use of this State. I do not know of any Continental arms within the State,

but I am well informed that there are a great number in Richmond, Virg.

I am, Sir, with esteem, yr. Humble St.,
RO. BURTON.

[In Sumner’s hand is the following, added:
“I date March 24th, ’82.
Omited by Col. Burton.”]
