Notes
1. The inventory of William Brevard Dusenbery's estate is housed in the North Carolina State Archives.
2. 1860 slave schedules indicate that Dusenbery owned three slaves: a black male, age 23; a black female, age 10, and a black male, age 7. County Court Records of Slaves and Free Persons of Color 1826–1898, North Carolina State Archives, contain a decree granting the heirs permission to sell the three slaves and divide the proceeds (Digital Library on American Slavery, Petition 21286204)
3. The additional inventory of William Brevard Dusenbery's estate is housed in the North Carolina State Archives. The single page has been folded into thirds.
4. John, Fannie, and Horrace were slaves and are mentioned in the initial inventory of Dusenbery's estate. 1860 slave schedules indicate that Dusenbery owned three slaves: a black male, age 23 [John]; a black female, age 10 [Fannie]; and a black male, age 7 [Horrace].
5. "Crying sale": a live auction, conducted by a "crier" or auctioneer, generally of a decedent's real or personal property.
6. "Dr": an abbreviation meaning "debit" used in accounting.
