Nunn, Elizabeth "Betsy" (né Copeland)

Elizabeth "Betsy" Copeland (d. 1851) was the daughter of Elizabeth Douglas (b. 1730) and David (1739-1799) Copeland of Chowan County, NC, and the second wife of William Nunn (1744-1806). The Nunns had five children: David H., Hugh, Ilai, Edith, and Sally. She is doubtless buried with her husband and servants in the Nunn family cemetery off Piney Mountain Road, between Chapel Hill and Hillsborough, NC. She and her husband William opened a popular tavern and boardinghouse in 1795 near the present site of the University Baptist Church on S. Columbia Street in Chapel Hill, NC. Although her husband died shortly after the boardinghouse opened, Betsy Nunn continued to operate it until her death at the age of 91 in 1851 (Vickers 13, 22).
