Holt, William Rainey

William Rainey Holt (1798-1868), the oldest son of Michael III (1778-1842) and Rachel Rainey (1778-1839) Holt, graduated from the University in 1817 and obtained his medical degree from the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. With an established medical practice in Lexington, NC, Holt was well known for trying new methods of agriculture on his farm and for supporting improved education. In 1822 he married Mary Gizeal Allen (1804-1832), with whom he had five children. In 1834 he married Louisa Allen Hogan (1816-1897), who bore him nine children (Dictionary of North Carolina Biography 3:191-92).
