Richard Caswell Swain (1836-1872), son of Eleanor White and David Lowry Swain, entered the University in 1854, joined the Philanthropic Society, and graduated in 1858. He became a physician and served in the Confederate army as a surgeon. Stancell's assertion that Richard Swain "deserted our army" cannot be confirmed. Records for the Thirty-Ninth North Carolina Regiment state that Swain was "Appointed Assistant Surgeon on August 27, 1862, and assigned to duty with this regiment. Reported absent sick during November-December, 1862. Reported in charge of the division hospital at Shelbyville, Tennessee, during March-April, 1863. No further records" (North Carolina Troops 10:110). Richard Swain died in a train accident in Illinois in 1872 (Vickers 74).
