Only two North Carolina officials are featured on the state's Civil War issues: State Treasurer Daniel Courts and, shown here, Governor Zebulon Baird Vance (1830-1894). A native of Buncombe County, N.C., Vance was a very popular "war governor," serving as the state's chief executive from 1862 to 1865. He served again as governor from 1877 to 1879 and later in the United States Congress. |
