North Carolina State Issue, 1863
NC Five-Dollar Note
Printed date "Jan. 1st, 1863."
This is another variation in style of five-dollar notes issued by North Carolina's state government. Some currency references often identify the goddess depicted here as Ceres. Given the complete absence of agricultural elements, the more likely identification is that of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom. Compare this figure with other images of Ceres and with the image of Minerva on North Carolina's 1861 one-dollar note.
