Barnhill recalls when the government paved a Madison County road, both a symbol and a catalyst for change in the area. Paved roads eliminated the need for one significant rehearsal of the communitarian spirit—driving slowly past neighbors' houses to avoid stirring the dirt from the road into their garden or porch.
