Struggling to find a way to preserve the rural lifestyle

Barnhill worries that by connecting communities with paved roads, development projects homogenize towns and communities. He is unsure how to respond to the changes he sees in Madison County, in part because fighting to maintain tradition seems like a concession that tradition is indeed dying. He does not know whether those interested in preserving rural culture should try to recreate what was lost or simply hold on to what remains.
