Boone's grandmother represented rural values

Boone uses an example to describe the rural values he fears Madison County is losing: when a local family's house burned down, his grandmother took them in. His grandmother seems to Boone to be the avatar of the qualities of rural life: self-sacrifice, hard work, generosity, and neighborliness.
