Using a past development failure as a learning experience

Rapp describes the poorly planned changes in his hometown of Bethel, North Carolina, which ballooned and lost its charm to strip malls and housing developments. His disappointment with Bethel's loss of natural beauty and community spirit may have influenced his approach to planning and development in Mars Hill.
