Struggling to maintain strength despite a devastating loss

Pickett illuminates some of the psychology of loss. He lost virtually all his property as a result of the flooding that accompanied Hurricane Floyd and seems determined not to allow his psyche to suffer similar devastation. He calls himself a "flood survivor" rather than a "flood victim," but feels deeply the flood's attack on the material of memories, especially his photos from the Vietnam War.
