New roads bring in businesses, but can let them out as well

Plemmons reflects on the influence of new roads on rural communities. Roads not only open communities to new businesses, residents, and visitors, he thinks, but they also offer an escape route for current businesses and residents. Marshall experienced both sides of this equation: roads brought booming business, then leached it dry as access to other towns was made easier.
