Decline of solidarity and self-reliance in Madison County

Plemmons describes his notion of place: "where you feel comfortable and you feel comfortable with people." Rural areas can encourage this feeling, not only by offering solitude and natural beauty, but with their communitarian spirit. While Plemmons welcomes diversity, he believes it has eroded community solidarity, as has dependence on processed food, which has damaged self-reliance.
