Older residents can pass their knowledge to newer ones

Plemmons describes one of the positive results of immigration to rural areas: the opportunity for older residents to offer advice to newcomers. Most college degrees do not confer understanding of planting cycles, and longtime residents can develop a relationship with new blood by sharing their knowledge. This strategy might be one way to prevent or delay a loss of community cohesion.
