Abstract:  Noted journalist Hodding Carter describes the change in Mississippi politics from the virulent racism of the 1960s to the relative moderation of the 1970s. Carter discusses a lot of the minutiae of Mississippi politics that might be confusing to researchers not intimately familiar with the state's political history, but offers many insightful reflections on the power of race in a state that emerged hobbled from the 1960s.
