		  <p TEIform="p">To day again I went to the office, but no letter was there to cheer
			 my spirits, by telling me to come home and hasten to the war. I was anxiously
			 expecting one, and the disapointment went quite hard. 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="name0000805" reg="Orange [County, NC] Guards" type="organization">The
				Orange Guards</name> left 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="name0000484" reg="Hillsborough, NC" type="place">Hillsboro</name> this morning, and I am told that there were few dry
			 eyes in <add TEIform="add" hand="EA" rend="sup">the</add> crowd congregated to see them
			 depart. There was parting with wives and children fathers and brothers, and
			 with some no doubt a parting for the last time. There was a flag raising here
			 to day. The ladies of the place made and put up the Flag. The citizens raised
			 the pole in which <pb TEIform="pb" id="mss06-07-p02" n="2"/>I had the pleasure of assisting.
			 Two young ladies made speaches and were followe by the following noted
			 gentlemen,

				F. [Samuel Field] Phillipps</name>, 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="pn0000052" reg="Ashe, Richard &quot;Dick&quot; James" type="person">Capt Ashe</name>, 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="pn0001638" reg="Swain, David Lowry" type="person">Gov
				Swain</name> and 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="pn0001575" reg="Smith, Sydney" type="person">Sidney
				Smith</name>, together with quite a number of Students. 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="pn0001638" reg="Swain, David Lowry" type="person">Gov
				Swain</name> in alluding to the war said that the south was invincible by any
			 force that our enemies can send against us. He thought that further blood shed<ref TEIform="ref" id="ref1137" rend="sup" targOrder="U" target="note1137" type="edit">2</ref>
			 could be avoided, by every man in the 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="name0001060" reg="The South" rend="no" type="place">South</name>
			 shouldering his musket. 
		  	<name TEIform="name" key="pn0001012" reg="Lincoln, Abraham" rend="no" type="person">Lincoln</name> would then see our strength and would know that it
			 would be useless to attempt to coerce us. Such being the case I beg you to let
			 me be one to proceed to 
		  	<name TEIform="name" key="name0000365" reg="Federal Point" rend="no" type="place">Federal
				Point</name>,<ref TEIform="ref" id="ref1138" rend="sup" targOrder="U" target="note1138" type="info">3</ref>
			 and frighten 
		  	<name TEIform="name" key="pn0001012" reg="Lincoln, Abraham" rend="no" type="person">Lincoln</name> out of his witts, if possible and if the 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="pn0001638" reg="Swain, David Lowry" type="person">Gov's</name>
			 prediction should <pb TEIform="pb" id="mss06-07-p03" n="3"/>prove untrue and war should
			 actually be necessary, I should be happy to bear a part, humble though it be,
			 in defense of my country. The flag raised to day contained nine stars, the last
			 two in honor of 
		  	<name TEIform="name" key="name0001190" reg="Virginia" rend="no" type="place">Virginia</name> and 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="name0000745" reg="North Carolina" rend="no" type="place">N. C</name>.<ref TEIform="ref" id="ref1139" rend="sup" targOrder="U" target="note1139" type="info">4</ref>
			 This is probably the first flag raised, on which 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="name0000745" reg="North Carolina" rend="no" type="place">N
				Carolina</name> has been numbered with the seceeding states. 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="pn0000589" reg="God" rend="no" type="person">God</name> grant that she
			 may soon take her place among her southern sisters in reality. News from 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="name0000631" reg="Maryland" type="place">Maryland</name> states
			 that, the citizens of 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="name0000062" reg="Baltimore, MD" type="place">Baltimore</name>
			 yesterday attacked the 
		  	<name TEIform="name" key="name0001041" reg="Seventh New York Regiment" rend="no" type="organization">Seventh regiment of N. Y.</name> which was proceeding to 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="name0001212" reg="Washington, DC" type="place">Washington</name> in answer to 
		  	<name TEIform="name" key="pn0001012" reg="Lincoln, Abraham" rend="no" type="person">Lincoln's</name> call. reports says that about 14 were killed.
			 </p> 
		  <p TEIform="p">Thank the lord that 
		  	<name TEIform="name" key="name0000631" reg="Maryland" rend="no" type="place">Maryland</name> has
			 yet some patriots left within her borders, who will oppose aggression
			 <pb TEIform="pb" id="mss06-07-p04" n="4"/>to the death, although she is presided ofer by the
			 traiterous 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="pn0000738" reg="Hicks, Thomas Holliday" type="person">Hicks</name>.<ref TEIform="ref" id="ref1140" rend="sup" targOrder="U" target="note1140" type="info">5</ref> I
			 learn even while<ref TEIform="ref" id="ref1141" rend="sup" targOrder="U" target="note1141" type="edit">6</ref>
			 writing that 
		  	<name TEIform="name" key="pn0001012" reg="Lincoln, Abraham" rend="no" type="person">Lincoln</name> has taken 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="pn0001505" reg="Scott, Winfield" type="person">Genl
				Scott</name> prisoner because he was going to side with the south, and had
			 thrown up his commission, and has him now in Prison. This is fine treatment to
			 give that old veteran who has fought and bled in defence of his country. There
			 was also a skirmish yesterday at 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="name0000466" reg="Harpers Ferry, WV" type="place">Harpers
				Ferry</name>. 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="pn0001010" reg="Lilley, Robert Doak" type="person">Major
			 	Lilly</name> of 
		  	<name TEIform="name" key="name0001190" reg="Virginia" rend="no" type="place">Virginia</name><ref TEIform="ref" id="ref1142" rend="sup" targOrder="U" target="note1142" type="info">7</ref>
			 who lives near there is here now on his way to take charge of his company. Two
			 Thousand 
		  	<name TEIform="name" key="name0001067" reg="South Carolinians" rend="no" type="people">South
				Carolineans</name> are now on their way to 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="name0000742" reg="Norfolk, VA" type="place">Norfolk</name> to
			 aid the 
		  	<name TEIform="name" key="name0001280" reg="Virginians" rend="no" type="people">virginians</name>
			 in taking 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="name0000387" reg="Fort Monroe, VA" type="place">fort
				Monroe</name>. Can I stay here and pretend to study, when I am continually
			 hearing news from the war and when my country needs<ref TEIform="ref" id="ref1143" rend="sup" targOrder="U" target="note1143" type="edit">8</ref>

		  <p TEIform="p">Apr 21<hi TEIform="hi" rend="sup">st </hi>since writing this letter I have heard
			 that fortress monroe is taken, that 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="pn0000480" reg="Ellis, John W." type="person">Gov
				Ellis</name> has caled out thirty thousand troops.<ref TEIform="ref" id="ref1144" rend="sup" targOrder="U" target="note1144" type="info">9</ref>
			 There is a company formin[g] here to go to 
		  	<name TEIform="name" key="name0001212" reg="Washington, DC" rend="no" type="place">Washington
				City</name>, composed of students. As my state needs my services I shall not
			 volunteer. Please write to 
			 <name TEIform="name" key="pn0000360" reg="Cowan, Captain (acquaintance of Edward Hall Armstrong)" type="person">Capt
				Cowan</name> immediately and see if he will except me. I am copelled to

			 the week. </p>

				forts, arsenals, and other property of the Federal government located in

					Carolina</name> in the name of the state" and promised the Confederate
