				<p> The undersigned in pursuance of a resolution of the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Board of Trustees</name>, directing them to advise Col. <name key="pn0001379" reg="Polk, William" type="person" rend="yes">Polk</name> in relation to the sale of the tract of land lying at the mouth of <name key="name0003066" reg="Yellow Creek (TN)" type="place" rend="yes">Yellow Creek</name>, which was devised to the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Trustees</name> by the late <name key="pn0000578" reg="Gerrard, Charles" type="person" rend="yes">Major Gerrard</name>, have performed that duty, as will be seen by a copy of their
					letter to Col. <name key="pn0001379" reg="Polk, William" type="person">Polk</name> which is hereunto annexed. The undersigned entertain no doubt of
					the perfect right of the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Trustees</name> to make such sale, and acquiesce entirely in the propriety of
					the measure, under the peculiar circumstances which render it necessary. They cannot however but
					regret that the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Board</name> has been thus compelled to violate the wish of the <name key="pn0000578" reg="Gerrard, Charles" type="person">Testator</name> that this tract should never be sold but remain forever the property
					of the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Trustees</name>. Anxious that the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Board</name> should manifest its grateful sense of the liberality of the <name key="pn0000578" reg="Gerrard, Charles" type="person">Donor</name> and should perpetuate the remembrance of it in some mode probably as
					effectual as would have been the retaining of the land, they respectfully recommend the following
					resolution:</p>
				<p>"Whereas the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Trustees</name> of the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">University of North Carolina</name> have been compelled to direct a sale of a
					valuable Tract of Land devised to them by the late Major <name key="pn0000578" reg="Gerrard, Charles" type="person">Charles Gerrard</name> with a request that the same might be perpetually
					retained by the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">University</name>; and whereas they are solicitous not only to manifest their
					own sense of the liberality of the <name key="pn0000578" reg="Gerrard, Charles" type="person">Donor</name> but as far as may be practicable to perpetuate its remembrance;<pb id="unc02-42-p02" n="2"/>Resolved therefore that two thousand dollars part of the purchase money of said land shall
					be applied to the finishing of the new Hall at the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">University</name>, and that the same shall be called by the name of <name key="name0000418" reg="Gerrard Hall" type="place">Gerrard Hall</name>." </p>
