January 3rd 1850
The Governor laid before the committee letters from
Professor Mitchell
&
Judge
Battle
on sundry subjects relating to the property & affairs of
the
University, when the committee after due consideration adopted the
following resolutions.
1st Resolved that the sum of Five Hundred dollars be and the
same is hereby appropriated for the improvement of the grounds around the
college buildings to be drawn from the Treasurer and expendid under the order
and direction of the committee hereafter appointed

nd Resolved that the said committee be authorised and
directed to have the covering of the
South Building
repaired

rd Resolved that the
Caldwell House
, heretofore purchased by the
Trustees
for the Presidents residence ought to

occupied by
the President of the College for the time being; and that
Gov Swain
be authorised
& requested to take possession of the same.

th Resolved that the House and appurtenances now in the
occupancy of
Gov
Swain
be appropriated to the use and occupation of the Professor of
Rhetoric & Logic
5th That the said committee be and
they are hereby authorised & directed to cause both of these places, the
dwelling outhouses, & fences to be properly repaired; that they make
sale on the best terms they can, of such superfluous or unnecessary Out-Houses
as can be spared from either of these places; & that the requisite
repairs of inclosures & fences be made of stone.

th That said
committee be directed to cause
the old society Halls in the
South Building
to be fitted up for Dormitories or such
other uses as the Institution may require.

th Resolved that
Gov Swain
Judge Battle
&
Professor
Mitchell
be and they, or a majority of them, are hereby appointed a
committee to carry out the foregoing resolutions, to cause

all repairs & work therein contemplated to be done in the
most faithfull and workmanlike manner and that they draw on the Treasurer from
time to time for such sums of money as may be necessary.
Resolved, that John W Norwood
Esqr the University atto. for the Hillsboro district be requested
to make inquiry into certain alleged trespasses on the University
lands near Chapel
Hill & to take such steps as may be necessary to dispossess
& punish intruders.
