                    <p>Yours of Dec. 26<hi rend="sup">th</hi> and previous were received. In
                        consequence of <name key="pn0001229" reg="Morehead, John Motley" type="person" rend="yes">Gov. Morehead's</name> leaving without definitely arranging with Cavanaugh we have
                        probably lost him, as I can learn nothing of his whereabout. He has probably
                        engaged with somebody, and left <name key="name0000729" reg="New York" type="place">N.Y.</name> Or, as I have just been led to surmise, <name key="name000" reg="Niblo's Garden (New York,NY)" type="place" rend="yes">Niblo</name> wishes to keep him, and
                        intercepts his letters. Of the second applicant, (M<hi rend="sup">c</hi>Laughlin,)
                            <name key="pn0003052" reg="Donaldson, James" type="person" rend="yes">Mr. Jas.
                        Donaldson</name> has ascertained that he is employed upon <name key="name0003054" reg="Staten Island (New York, NY)" type="place" rend="yes">Staten Island</name>, with one
                            Mr. Reid. I shall
                        endeavor to see him and arrange with him to go to <name key="name0000165" reg="Chapel Hill, NC" type="place" rend="yes">Ch. Hill</name>, if possible, but as
                        a few days may<pb id="unc03-12-p02" n="2"/>elapse before the matter can be
                        definitely settled, I have resolved to send you this note, to relieve your
                        suspense, and shew you that the matter is not quite neglected by me. I have
                        written to M<hi rend="sup">c</hi>Laughlin, and I now await his answer. I know that it is
                        time <hi rend="underscore">now</hi>, that you had him at <name key="name0000165" reg="Chapel Hill, NC" type="place">Chap. Hill</name>.</p>
