                    <head>Report.</head>
                    <p>The Committee appointed at the last annual meeting of the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Board</name> to consider in conjunction with the Professors of the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">College</name> the propriety of increasing the amount of study
                        &amp; scholarship at present required of Candidates for admission into
                        the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">Institution</name>.</p>
                    <p>And also to inquire whether certain modifications might not be adopted in
                        regard to the duties of the Faculty with a view to the better government of
                        the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">College</name> &amp; a more equal distribution
                        of labor among the Professors &amp; Tutors in the instruction of the
                        classes &amp; for other purposes — report that they have
                        duly attended to the several subjects <pb id="unc04-10-p02" n="264"/>
                        referred to their consideration and aided by written communications received
                        from the President &amp; Professors beg leave to recommend to the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Board</name> the adoption of the following</p>

                        <head>Resolutions.</head>
                        <p>1. Resolved that the quantity of preparatory of study for admission into
                            the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">University</name> be increased &amp; that
                            from &amp; after the next Annual Commencement in June 1835, in
                            addition to the present list, Candidates for admission be required to
                            pass an approved examination on the following Books. In Mathematics, the
                            whole of Arithmetic (<name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Barnard's</name> or <name key="x" reg="yes" type="person" rend="">Adams'</name>) &amp; <name key="pn0003256" reg="Young, John Radford" type="person" rend="yes">Young's</name>
                            Algebra to simple equations</p>
                        <p>In the Classics, <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Jacobs'</name> Greek reader, the whole of the prose or graca minora
                            &amp; the latter part of <name key="x" reg="x" type="person">Jacob's</name> Greek Reader the whole of <name key="pn0001711" reg="Virgil" type="person">Virgil</name>, and <name key="pn0000314" reg="Cicero, Marcus                                 Tullius" type="person" rend="yes">Cicero's</name> select Orations except the
                            Philippics.</p>
                        <p>2. Resolved that the several members of the Faculty give instruction
                            &amp; hear recitations on the various branches of study &amp;
                            education taught in the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North                                 Carolina" type="organization">University</name> as follows.</p>
                        <p>President <name key="pn0000268" reg="Caldwell, Joseph" type="person" rend="yes">Caldwell</name> to hear, each week (if his health permit,
                            &amp; if not Professor <name key="pn0000033" reg="Anderson, Walker" type="person" rend="yes">Anderson</name> to hear for him) three

                        <p>3. Resolved that for the next Session there be three Tutors whose
                            salaries &amp; duties shall be as heretofore prescribed and that
                            President <name key="pn0000268" reg="Caldwell, Joseph" type="person">Caldwell</name> or in his absence Prof<hi rend="sup">r</hi>
                            <name key="pn0001194" reg="Mitchell, Elisha" type="person">
                            Mitchell</name> be authorized &amp; requested to make said
                            appointments without delay.</p>
                        <p>4. Resolved that from &amp; after the 1<hi rend="sup">st</hi> day of
                            January 1835 there be three Tutors, one of whom shall reside in each of
                            the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">College</name> buildings, and they be entitled
                            to receive each a salary of $600. That one of these be styled
                            the Tutor of Ancient &amp; Modern Languages — a second
                            Tutor of Ancient Languages, and the third, Tutor of Mathematics. And the
                                <name key="name0000224" reg="Committee of Appointments, Board of                                 Trustees" type="organization" rend="yes">Committee of Appointments</name> are
                            requested, after public notice, to fill these offices.</p>
                        <p>5. Resolved that the President &amp; Professors of the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">University</name> be requested to present to the
                            next Annual Meeting of the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Board of Trustees</name>
                            in Dec<hi rend="sup">r</hi> next such alterations in the plan of
                            education &amp; such improvements in the general method of
                            conducting &amp; governing public institutions of learning as their
                            own experience &amp; their acquaintance with the practice
                            &amp; arrangements of other colleges may suggest.</p>
                        <p>6. Resolved that in the present <pb id="unc04-10-p04" n="266"/>precarious
                            state of the funds of the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of                                 North Carolina" type="organization">Institution</name> it is not expedient to take
                            steps for the erection of a Building for the two Literary Societies
                            &amp; for Professor's Offices.</p>

                    <p>The foregoing report was read &amp; concurred in &amp; the
                        Resolution adopted.</p>
                    <p>On motion of M<hi rend="sup">r</hi> Iredell</p>
                    <p rend="center">Resolved</p>
                    <p>That the said Committee be further directed to report to the next Annual
                        Meeting of the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Board</name> the length of time that each Professor
                        is engaged in hearing the recitation of each class and that the Secretary
                        correspond with some of the Principal Colleges for the purpose of
                        ascertaining the duties of their officers &amp; the time devoted to
                        recitations &amp; lecturing. </p>
