As the annual examination in the
will commence on the 23<hi rend="sup">d</hi> of June, I am
directed by His Excellency the President of the
to
request your attendance at that time, as a member of the
. The
at their sessions in December '96 entered into the following
Resolution. "Resolved that the
shall attend at
the annual examination in November of every year, and that their attendance at
the semi-annual examination be dispensed with, and that in addition to the
duties heretofore assigned them, it shall be their duty to pronounce their
judgment on said examination, so far as relates to the conduct <pb id="unc04-38-p02" n="[2]"/> and proficiency of the Students, in the presence
of the Faculty, at the close of the examination." It is necessary to
remark that since this resolution was passed, the annual examination has been
transferred from November to June; so that the attendance of the
is now required in
June, and not in November. It is disagreeable to observe that the members of
former Committees, have not been so punctual in their attendance, <gap reason="[unrecovered]"/> might have been expected. Of the eight it has been
seldom possible to procure the attendance of more than two or three. From this
inattention, the
must have suffered
considerably; and must continue to suffer, unless a remedy be found in the
uniform support of those under whose direction it is placed. Your attendance
sir, with that of the other Gentlemen of the
, <pb id="unc04-38-p03" n="[3]"/>
could not fail to have a beneficial effect on the Faculty and Students;
especially the latter, by exciting that laudable emulation which is so
necessarily connected with every kind of improvement. In addition to these
considerations, as it is probable some matters of importance will be submitted
to the
,
should a sufficient number appear, to constitute a Board, it is hoped that if
your private engagements will possibly permit, you will attend on the occasion.
