August 28th 1868
At a special meeting of the
Executive Committee of the Trustees
of the
University of North Carolina held in the
Executive Office this day,
Gov. Holden
presiding, the following resolutions,
offered by
W. M. Coleman, Esq., were
unanimously adopted.
Resolved, that in the death of
Gov. Swain
the people of
North Carolina have been deprived
of the services of one who, for more than forty years of public life, has
labored faithfully for their material, intellectual, and moral welfare.
Resolved, that the University of North Carolina, and the cause of
education generally, and historical literature especially, have sustained in his
death an irreparable loss.
Resolved, that these proceedings be published in the newspapers of this city, and
that James F. Taylor, Esq., one of
the members of this Board, be requested to deliver a copy there of to
the family of the deceased.
Resolved, that
James F. Taylor Esq. be
instructed to communicate to the family of the deceased that the
Board
would desire the remains to be buried in the College Campus, near the monument
of
President
Caldwell
if agreeable to their wishes.
