                <p> I have delayed to write home a long time I known but I have been so very buisy
                    that I could not find time to write and besides It was some time before I could
                    secure a room for all the rooms in College ware filled, and it was only through
                    the kindness of M<hi rend="sup">r</hi>
                    <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Sessions</name> a Gentleman from
                        <name key="name0000607" reg="Louisiana" type="place">Louisiana</name> tha I
                    finaly procured one. When I started from home I was very unwell and did not get
                    better until I left <name key="name0001017" reg="Salem, NC" type="place" rend="yes">Salem</name>, whare I obtained some pills which affectualy
                    releived me and I arrived here on Wednsday about twelve. I was not very well
                    pleased with <name key="name0000165" reg="Chapel Hill, NC" type="place">Chapel
                        Hill</name> at first<pb id="unc06-67-p02" n="[2]"/>but have since become
                    better for when I first arrived I had few acquaintances and felt almost lost
                    among so many boys and besides they all hallood at us fresh all the time and
                    called we long-legged ones Shanghais. The Students did not attempt to black the
                    fresh this session. I suppose the shooting last year scared them off. for they
                    say that this Class has come off better than any class that has been here for
                    some time and if that is so I pitty those that have come here before us for they
                    have done us bad enough. I am rooming in a brick row in front of the Campus two
                    doors below M<hi rend="sup">r</hi>
                    <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Nicholson</name> a very quied and
                    good place to study. thare are several other gentleman her from near <name key="name0000216" reg="Columbia, TN" type="place">Columbia Tenn</name><pb id="unc06-67-p03" n="[3]"/>and among others M<hi rend="sup">r</hi>
                    <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Gordon</name> I expect some relation
                    of yours, also a fellow student of <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Allens</name> Mr <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Park</name>
                    who says he is acquainted withe all my relations about <name key="name0000216" reg="Columbia, TN" type="place">Columbia</name>. I have formed an
                    acquaintance with M<hi rend="sup">r</hi>
                    <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Crump</name> a brother of the <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Doctors</name>, also Mr <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Lorand</name>. I was asking him if he was at
                    the <name key="name0001020" reg="Salisbury, NC" type="place" rend="yes">Salsbury</name> ball he said that he was and that he formed an acquaintance
                    with some very interesting ladies from the western part of the stat. I did not
                    however tell him that I was acquainted with them becaus he seemed so much
                    interested that I did not care about being boored with questions. I expect you
                    all have had a fine time since I left for I believe you was expecting <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Ann Hickenson</name> and <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Sallie Gwyn</name>. I expect Brother <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">James</name> through here shortly
                        for<pb id="unc06-67-p04" n="[4]"/>I believe it is about the time he said he
                    would be though. Thare is a great deal of excitement here about the election
                        <name key="pn0000604" reg="Graham, William Alexander" type="person" rend="yes">Graham</name> is elected over <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Jones</name> by 33 majority and thare is a great many raports from
                    different counties but no certainty in them.</p>
                <p>Excuse this letter.</p>
                <p>Give my love to all my relations and friends and tell them all to write soon.</p>

                        (1828-1891), who were born to Brown's mother <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Sarah Gwyn</name> and her first husband <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Nathaniel Gordon</name>.</p>
