                <p>I have the honor to apply for a leave of absence for twelve months from the 21<hi rend="sup">st</hi> of Sept. 1861.</p>
                <p>Feeling it to be my duty to take part in our struggle for independence, if it
                    could be done without compromising my duty to the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">University</name>;
                    and Prof <name key="pn0000909" reg="Kimberly, John" type="person" rend="yes">Kimberly</name> having kindly consented to take my classes during my
                    absence; having been instructed moreover by the President Gov. <name key="pn0001638" reg="Swain, David Lowry" type="person" rend="yes">Swain</name>, that upon consultation with such of the Trustees as he could see,
                    he found that they would approve the proceeding; I raised a company of
                    volunteers for twelve months &amp; have since been in "the
                    service". I beg to submit this report of my course, &amp; to ask
                    your endorsement of the same.</p>
