                <p>To show that the welfare and interests of our <name key="name0000869" reg="Philanthropic Society" type="organization" rend="yes">Society</name>
                    are still of the highest importance to me, I herewith transmit the autographs of
                    President <name key="pn0000816" reg="Jackson, Andrew" type="person">Andrew
                        Jackson</name> and Gen. <name key="pn0000971" reg="Lee, Robert E." type="person" rend="yes">Robt. E. Lee</name>. </p>
                <p>The former has been in possession of the family for some time — the
                    latter I obtained on application to Gen. <name key="pn0000971" reg="Lee, Robert E." type="person">Lee</name>. <gap reason="[unrecovered]"/>
                    have very much feared that the <name key="name0000869" reg="Philanthropic Society" type="organization">Society</name> would be
                    greatly demoralized on account of the paucity of students, but entertain the
                    hope that as long as the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">University of North
                        Carolina</name> is in operation, so long will the <name key="name0000869" reg="Philanthropic Society" type="organization">Philanthropic Society</name>
                    be the exponent of "Virtue, Liberty and Science." I have
                    applied to Pres. <name key="pn0000404" reg="Davis, Jefferson" type="person" rend="yes">Davis</name> for his signature, which, if he sends, I will
                    forward to the <name key="name0000869" reg="Philanthropic Society" type="organization">Society</name>. </p>
                <p>The idea of sending the autographs was suggested to me on seeing the letter of
                        <name key="pn0000540" reg="Franklin, Benjamin" type="person" rend="yes">Ben.
                        Franklin</name> in the <name key="name0000284" reg="Dialectic Society" type="organization" rend="yes">Dialectic</name> Library. Hoping that success
                    and harmony may ever attend our noble <name key="name0000869" reg="Philanthropic Society" type="organization">Society</name>,</p>
