                <p>I would have written to you before, but it was my time to recite first this week,
                    and do not have but an hour and a half to get my lesson in.</p>
                <p>I received a letter from Sister <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Catherine</name> day before yesterday, which of course gave me a <hi rend="underscore">great deal</hi> of <hi rend="underscore">pleasure</hi> as
                    it was the first, that I ever received from her. Sister <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Anne</name> is the only sister I have (except <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Sally</name>) from whom I have never
                    received a letter.</p>
                <p>I have a very sore toe, for one of the boys mashed the nail off of it, and which
                    caused me to be absent from prayers once, for it kept me awake untill after
                    midnight, and after I did get to sleep, I sleeped so sound that I could not hear
                    the bell next morning, for which I was very sorry, for I had resolved not to be
                    absent at all the last report, but I hope you will excuse me.</p>

                <p>I have said nothing to <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">John</name>
                    about going home, for I knew that there would be no holiday at easter, But <name key="pn0001462" reg="Ruffin, Thomas" type="person">Papa</name> I wish you
                    would let me go home any how for I will not be absent from prayers But twice or
                    three times &amp; from recitations twice, and you will know where I have
                    been, and I will promise to make up the recitations which I lose. </p>
                <p>I have drawn from D<hi rend="sup">r</hi>
                    <name key="pn0001194" reg="Mitchell, Elisha" type="person" rend="yes">Mitchel</name> five more Dollars, <!-- What symbol is this? -->5 <hi rend="sup">cts</hi> of which I payed for postage &amp; 5
                    <!-- What symbol is this? --> of which I deposited in the post office, and spent
                    25 <hi rend="sup">cts</hi> for candy and 25 <hi rend="sup">cts</hi> for some
                    grapes and have the rest remaining in hand. I expect I will want no more money
                    except to pay my Ball subscription, and if any badges of society come from the
                    north I will be oblige to buy one for if I dont, they will fine me, which is
                    more than it will cost. <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">John
                    Brodnax</name> returned from <name key="name0000484" reg="Hillsborough, NC" type="place" rend="yes                             ">Hills.</name> last
                    monday where he had been to a party given by Col. <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Jones</name>.</p>
                <p>Tell <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Susan Mary</name> that I will
                    answer her letter soon, if it can be called so, for it was two lines and a half.
                    and tell <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Mary Cain</name> that I
                    will kiss<pb id="unc11-03-p03" n="[3]"/>her the next time I see her for reading
                    the letter which I wrote, for <name key="x" reg="x" type="person">Susan
                    Mary</name> informed on her. </p>
                <p>The Senior class are very busy, for they have to speak next week, <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">James M<hi rend="sup">c</hi>Neill</name> heard
                    from home the other week and all are well. </p>
                <p>There is nothing new here &amp; I expect you are tired reading this scrol of
                    bad written nonsense,</p>
                <p>Give my love to all, and tell <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Mama</name> that am very much oblige to her for the pantaloons.</p>

                    as I had sealed my letter one of the boys handed me a letter from <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">James</name>, who says that <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Smith</name> has broke up School entirely on
                    account of the rumours in the neighbourhood and he will teach som few of the
                    boys and <name key="x" reg="x" type="person">James</name> and <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">George</name> may stay untill you go up, and
                        <name key="x" reg="x" type="person">James</name> says he hopes that you can
                    persuade Mr <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">S</name>. to let<pb id="unc11-03-p04" n="[4]"/>them stay also, but he does not mention <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">S. Cain</name> I supposes he quits and
                        <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">R. Brod</name>. but not <name key="x" reg="x" type="person" rend="">Fed</name>.</p>
