Notes:

North Carolinians comprised a high percentage of the 81st Division's troop strength. Included among the photographs in the William B. Umstead Collection is a framed panoramic image of the officers in the 317th Machine-Gun Battalion while in training at Camp Jackson, South Carolina. In one photograph (CK.621.177), dating from early 1918, each of the battalion's thirty-one officers is identified by name and by his state of origin. Of that number, nine (29%) were identified from North Carolina, including Lieutenant Umstead.
