North Carolina Council of Defense
[The State of North Carolina Through its Council of Defense Deeply Sympathizes with You ...]
[Raleigh, N.C.: The Council, 1917 or 1918].
This is the official condolence card that the North Carolina Council of Defense sent to the families of North Carolina soldiers who died during the war. (For more on the NCCD, see The Home Front/Mobilizing Resources section.) The card went to loved ones of the 833 soldiers who were either killed in action or perished from wounds received in battle, but not to the survivors of the 1,542 North Carolinians who succumbed to disease.
