PATENTS FOR LAND.

To all whom these prsents shall come I Wm̄ Berkeley Kt Governor and Capt. Genrll of Virginia Greeting in our Lord God everlasting Whereas by Instructions from ye kings most Excet Majestie Directed to me and ye Councel of State his Majestie was graciously pleased to authorize me ye said Governr and councell to grant Patents and to assigne such proportions of land to all Adventurers and Planters as have been usuall heretofore in ye like Cases either for Adventurers of money or transportac̄on of people into this Collony according to a Charter of Orders from ye late treasurer and Company And yt ye said Proportion of fifty acres of land be granted and assigned for every person Transported hither since midsum̄er 1625 and yt ye same course be continued to all Adventurers and Planters untill it shall be otherwise determined by his Majestie Now know ye yt I the sd Sr Wm̄ Berkeley Kt &c Doe wt ye consent of ye Councell of State accordingly Give and Grant unto Mr Tho: Relfe Seven hundred and fifty Acres of land Lying on ye Southwest side of Pasquotank River Begining at a Small cypresse at ye mouth of a Swamp and runing by Tho: Keele his land into ye Woods South west and by West 320 pole then N: West & by N. 375 Pole then N East & by East to a Marked Sypresse in ye cod of a Bay being one of Mr fforsons marked trees and soe along ye Bay to ye Point in ye River and downe the said River of Pasquotanck to ye first Station ye said land being due to ye said Thomas Relfe by and for ye transportac̄on of fifteen Persons into this Collony whose names are in the Record menc̄oned under this Patent To have and to hold ye said land wt his due share of all Mines and Mineralls therein Conteined wt all Rights and Previleges of Hunting Hawking fishing ffowling wt all Woods Waters and Rivers wt all Profitts Comoditys and heriditamts wtsoever belonging to ye said Land to him ye said Thomas Relfe his heirs and assignes for ever in as large and ample Manner to all Intents and purposes as is Expressed in a

Charter of Orders from ye late treasurer and Company Dated ye 18th of November 1618 or by Consequence may be justly Collected out of ye same or out of ye Letter Patents whereon they are Grounded to be held of our Soveraigne lord ye king his heires and and Successors for ever as of his Mannor of East Greenwich in free and Com̄on soccage and not in Capite nor in Kts Service Yielding and paying unto our sd soveraigne Lord ye king his heires and successors for every fifty acres of land hereby Granted yearly at ye feast of St Michael ye Archangell ye fe rent of one shilling Which paymt is to be made yearly from year to year according to his Majesties Instructions of ye 12th of September 1662. Provided yt if the said Tho: Relfe his heires or assignes doe not seat or plant or cause to be seated or planted upon ye sd Land wtin three years after ye next Insueing yt then it shall be lawfull for any Adventurer or planter to make Choice and seat thereupon Given at James Cyty under my hand and ye seal of ye Collony ye 25th day of September 1663 & in ye 15th year of ye Reigne of our Sovereige Lord king Charles ye Second &c
