Chatham County, 18th March, 1782.

Sir:

I congratulate you on your happy escape out of the hands of our

cruel enemies. I dare say, ere this, you are acquainted with the cruelties which are committed in this part of the Country, murdering men and women and burning houses. I do assure you, Sir, that unless some step is immediately taken, we shall soon be in a worse case than last summer.

The small party of those that are embodied in this County is without either arms or ammunition.

Major Griffith, the Commandant of this County, sends this Express for a supply of ammunition and gun-flints, which you will please to order and send on immediately.
