TO GOV. THOS. BURKE FROM COL. WILLIAM R. DAVIE.
[From Executive Letter Book.]

Wheeler’s, April 14th, 1782.

Dear Sir:

I had the pleasure of answering your official letter on Wednesday last.

A little calculation will furnish your good nature with an apology for its laconism.

It is reported that Fanning has two of the members of Assembly. Pray don’t give us another melancholy instance of that careless indifference to personal safety, which, though a part of your nature, is inconsistent with your obligations to your friends and family.

My happiness, though very complete on Thursday last, would have been more so by the presence of some of my absent friends. I should have felt a singular satisfaction in seeing you unlaced from the cares of State.

“Mingling o’er the friendly bowl,
The feast of reason and the flow of soul.

I wish the misfortune of those members may not retard the meeting of the House.

I shall see you about the 25th.

Adieu!

I have the pleasure to be,
With sincere Respect and Esteem,
Your Most Obedient Servant,
WILLIAM R. DAVIE.
