BRIG. GEN. SUMNER TO COL. P. HAWKINS.

Sunday, January 28th, 1782.

Dear Sir:

I am under the necessity of making application to you, as of the Civil power, for a warrant to impress two men with horses to go Express, the warrant to be directed to Wm. Christmas, Esq., who I think the most judicious person under immediate business. The business of Express is often of the utmost consequence to the public weal.

Tho’ I know I need not mention to you the propriety of communicating intelligence, and business of a public nature being very essential to Military operations.

The Express I wish to attend to-morrow morning.

I am, with respect, yr. servt.,
JETHRO SUMNER.
