GOV. THOS BURKE TO GEN. ALLEN JONES.

Halifax, March 23rd, 1782.

Dear Sir:

I perceive that Fanning and his Party are extremely troublesome, and as it will be necessary to have an effectual force on foot, both to defend the Assembly from Insults and to pursue the disaffected, I wish to have some Horsemen equipped with Swords. Col. Branch informs me he has 20 horses for public Service, and I am informed there are as many more in the Counties of Franklin & Nash. Could we procure Saddles, Bridles and Swords we could Mount a very useful Troop. I request you to procure for me from your District forty or fifty Swords and as many Saddles and Bridles. This reinforcement Carried to the Westward will, I hope, enable us to Suppress the Banditti which have been hitherto so injurious.

I am yr. very Obedt. St.,
THOS. BURKE.
General Jones.
