GOV. ALEX. MARTIN TO LIEUT. COL. GUARDS.
[From Executive Letter Book.]

Dan River, 2d October, 1782.

To the Lieutenant Colonel, Commandant of the Guards attending the Commisrs. to lay off the Continental Officers’ Lands, &c.

Sir:

You being appointed to the command of the Guards to attend the Commissioners to lay off the Continental Officers Lands, your principal care and attention will be to prevent your Camp from being surprised or even disturbed with scouting parties of Indians who may be hostile to you. As I make no doubt from your having seen service you will secure your Camp every night by proper pickets; have out advance flank and rear Guards on your march every day. Every volunteer or attendant must enroll himself under your command, who must be armed, otherwise be dismissed from the Camp. As to your Marches and routs you will receive directions from the Commissioners. You will preserve such discipline among the Officers and men as will enforce due subordination, and a strict obedience to your orders.

I am Sirs, &c.,
ALEX. MARTIN.
